If you've ever thought to yourself, "I don't have a story to tell."
First, allow me to gently disagree. Then let me affirm that you have a incredible story that needs to be told, but it's quite common to not know where to start.
Here are a few of questions to get you on your way:
1. What is a unique perspective you have? (This could be about life, your work, some niche hobby or interest) You'll probably have several, but pick the first one that comes to mind.
Starting from the place of "what do I see that no one else sees", will allow you to provide thoughtful insight from the inside out. This is probably already something you're actively observing and thinking about so developing your storytelling should flow a bit more naturally.
2. What is the origin of this perspective? (Who, what, when, where shaped it)
We're going to get a bit meta here, but this is the story that shapes your story. While we are more than the sum of our stories, the stories we tell rarely begin with us. This doesn't negate our unique perspectives but it's important to remember that what we're trying to comment on did not form in a vacuum.
3. How has holding this perspective impacted your life?
How does this point of view impact your decision making? Have you have to pay significant costs to hold this position?
Answering this questions helps to reveal how your perspective connects to your values and provides demonstrable evidence of your story at work.
4. If those around you more deeply understood your perspective what impact might that have?
So why should you tell the story and to whom? The things we see and care about that are worth sharing often come with a desired positive impact on the world around us. We want to see X change, we want to inspire our people to Y action. As you consider your unique perspective, before telling a story it's necessary to consider how it would work in the wild and from there do the work to craft the story.
