Is your story big enough?

If you're reading this you're probably asking yourself the follow up question, "Big enough for what?"

Which is a logically appropriate response.

Or perhaps you're wondering, "What do you mean by, 'big'"?

Again, great follow up.

We'll get there, but first, I'd like to invite you to take minute to imagine your favorite epic story (book, film, play, tv show etc.)

When I mean epic, we need something with really high stakes. Something life and death, civilization is on the line, a way of being is in jeopardy. A story where the odds of survival or victory are long, but worth facing, because the options are try or accept impending doom.

Ok, you got it?

Now, think of the hero(es) of this story. Who are the ones who decide to face this situation and try to shift the outcome?

How are they invited into this drama?

What do they have at stake personally?

What motivates them to action?

How are they uniquely equipped to deal with this problem?

What are their shortcomings?

What help do they need?

From whom do they receive support?

And we could continue asking these questions that shape the unfolding of the story.

But, inevitably we arrive at a moment in the narrative where the hero and their assembled associates, -- having come through initial obstacles, with evident growth, community, and a clarified sense of mission -- must face the ultimate foe.

Every piece of the story has been leading to this moment. Every character shaped and refined for their role. The stakes elevated and articulated in personal and transcendent ways.

Every one knows what comes next and the part they play. All that's left is to do it.

Now, is your story big enough?

Is your mission clear?

Are the stakes known?

Do your people know how they are uniquely and personally involved in moving the story forward?

Is your team aligned and equipped to face the obstacles along the way?

----------------

Now, you might think to yourself, "Isn't this a bit much?" "All we're trying to do is [__fill in the blank__] It's like the world will end."

You may have a point. But consider the lives and the portion of the world you do impact.

The story you invite your little part of the world in has a chance to help shape meaning and bring a bit of hope.

The way you do what you do, and why you do it can make all the difference in the world.

A well provided for, satisfied, and purpose-filled team.

Long lasting relationships with those you serve.

So, is your story big enough?
