Of all the things that set humans apart as unique, storytelling might be one of the most distinct. As long as humans have walked the earth stories have been used to pass on valuable information from one group to another.
In the most ancient forms these stories communicated valuable information about how to survive.
"Go here for water and shelter."
"When winter comes follow the bison."
Simple information like the need for food, water, shelter, and community were contextualized to current situations or presented tangible indicators for the future.
Stories were necessary for survival.

Stories still carry valuable information and each day we unknowingly participate in that which has been told to us.
But now when we're hungry we don't need to go out and hunt or gather we can go to the fridge, or air fry something, or open an app and have it delivered to our door for a fee.
It could seem like the survival value of story has been diminished but under each innovative way to solve a problem lies some desire for us to move forward. To better ourselves or humanity.
To our ancestors it might appear inconceivable or lazy to just order our food, but perhaps that innovation allows us more time to invest in building our community. Something just as valuable to humanity. Time to share stories. Time to connect and build relationships.
In one way or another storytelling comes back to human connection and flourishing.
We tell stories to share what matters to us, and we listen to stories to understand what matters to others. In these exchanges we can find the commonality that might propel us forward toward a better collective future.
